Fish Culture in Gabon

Compost with plankton bloom

The farmer is standing behind his compost pile. Village waste is dumped into a pond enclosure to serve as fertilizer to make fish grow. Overtime it breaks down and releases nutrients into the water and the smaller plant and animal life (plankton) will grow and produce. The green water is a sign that the microscopic life is flourishing and the fish will do likewise as they filter feed from this plankton bloom. Fish were also fed termites, manioc leaves, and banana leaves directly.
